Fundraising has been the project of a family mostly based in Canada. We have had Jocelyn whose constant input and the expertise of her Masters' thesis on International Management has guided our policy. Antonia has spent hours using her professional skills to design and produce our beautiful letter cards, flyers and business cards. Marylee has travelled backwards and forwards to Zambia from Canada, at her own expense. This is her retirement project: to answer any questions the women might have, spending 6 months there annually - training and expanding the scope of the group. Adrien has always been in Zambia to catch the ball if it seems in danger of falling to the ground. Tom and Thea, the enablers, have supported us, the visitors, and the women, on their farm, at no financial cost. Josephine is our Web Master.

This is a "bottom-up" project, with the women doing all the real work, and it has been our great pleasure to deal with them during these years.

Our Future

We are at an important stage in our development now, with the women trained in skills and management, and we are all ready to move on, to broaden our scope both geographically and in regard to skills.

Recently, the women received US $10,000 from the World Bank, as one the the two most promising small business enterprises in the province. With this money, they bought another sewing machine and now intend to train themselves in tailoring, buy bicycles and peddle their wares through the surrounding villages. They will also buy seed, tools, wheelbarrows, and expand their garden. The Zambian government recognized them also, and they were promised the equivalent of $600 which has so far not reached them.

For the school, we require major funding to supply water, electricity, and new classrooms. We are currently looking for a donor.

2008 Update

So far neither the money from the World Bank nor the Ministry (both promised in 2005) has been received by the women. We wonder why.
