With a tax base of 5-10% of the
population, the Zambian government is hard-pressed to create and maintain
the infrastructure of the country. With a burgeoning population (from
1 million to 11.6 million in 70 years), schools are pushed beyond maximum
capacities.
Like many rural schools in Africa, the Malambo Basic government school was derelict. At the beginning of 2007, funders assisted in the transformation of the school, supplying tables, chairs, text and exercise books, pens, pencils,
art supplies, and sports equipment. Here, a happy and industrious student completes her art project. 2008 Update
This year we had two goals. When the water table rose and the drop
toilets of Malambo School filled and keeled over in the downpours of the
rainy season, water swept in torrents through the village, and fish swam
upstream into the community from the river. Understandably, the school
was threatened by the Ministry with closure. The toilets had been
built at minimum expense, without foundations. However, with help from
LearnServe Zambia and other donors we constructed a block of toilets with
foundations six feet deep (they'll never keel over!) Four holes for
boys, four for girls. With 250 students approximately, we search for
other donors to build another block, this time with a "shower room".
There is no water laid onto the school, nor electricity to warm the water,
but the children would carry buckets of water and pour it over their heads
in the privacy of a room, with the privilege of a cement floor. A
block of toilets costs about $2,000.
